Marine Conservation internships

Sodwana Bay Marine National Park - South Africa

If you’re a scuba diver looking to upskill – or if you’ve always wanted to learn – then this is the marine conservation internship for you. You’ll learn about Indian Ocean Reef Conservation, receive marine ecology training through a dynamic lecture series, and gain scuba experience in one of the world’s best diving locations, situated at iSimangaliso Wetland Park - South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Quick info:

  • Internships start on the 1st of every month only.
  • The minimum duration requirement is just 2 weeks.
  • You’ll have to be a competent swimming.
  • Dive training from a certified PADI Dive Instructor is included in the program.
  • If you’re already dive certified, you’ll receive advanced or speciality training.
  • To access this program, O.R. Tambo Airport in Johannesburg (JNB) is the typical international gateway into South Africa. From there, a domestic connection to the Richards Bay Domestic Airport (RCB) is required.

Environmental conservation internships

Balule Game Reserve at Kruger National Park - South Africa

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, while also comprising part of the Great Limpopo Trans-Frontier Park, which connects sanctuaries in South Africa, Zimbawbe and Mozambique. The Balule Game Reserve, where the internship program is based, is located along the western boundary of Kruger National Park and animals roam free across the whole area. Conservation initiatives that interns assist with is directly related to the Panthera Predator Monitoring Project and Biodiversity Conservation Research Projects.

Environmental conservation internships

Conservation Internships in Central America

If you’re interested in intense biodiversity, look no further than Central America. Visually stunning landscapes with vibrant natural, cultural and historical attractions, await interns in destinations such as Costa Rica and Guatemala. A proactive attitude is important on these programs, so that you can get stuck in with activities such as organic gardening, field research, helping to maintain trails, and ecological education. If have a background in biology or marine sciences, then Wildlife Conservation internships in Costa Rica have placements available at either a wildlife research station or a marine conservation center and aquarium. Typical internship activities can include caring for injured or rehabilitating species, cleaning and maintenance, participation in educational campaigns, aquaculture, assisting in fieldwork and data collection from ongoing research.

  • Internships in Guatemala and Costa Rica are available on the first and third Monday of every month.
  • The minimum duration requirement is just 2 weeks.
  • You’ll need some basic Spanish to join these programs and you can also take Spanish language lessons in-country to continue boosting your resume.
  • To access these programs, you’d fly into the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) for a Costa Rican internship or the La Aurora International Airport (GUA) for a Guatemalan internship.
