What recent interns said about their experience
I enjoyed seeing the cultural dofferences in the mental health field. It was nice to be with a host family and explore the culture there as well.
Everything was perfect! Placement was amazing, the local coordinator Abdi helped us sooo much! My accommodation was very comfortable, the food was amazing and the family was very welcoming!!!
The mental health hospital in which I was placed was an eye-opening experience. As an intern, I played a vital role. I assisted individuals with stress management, self-esteem, and emotional and mental health issues. I collaborated with mental health professionals to help perform clinical assessments or develop treatment plans. I also encouraged clients to express feelings and discuss life events to help develop insight into themselves or their relationships. Lastly, I helped to gather and research information about community mental health needs or resources used in conjunction with therapy. Cultural diversity brings a wealth of knowledge and experiences to the workplace. Embrace the chance to learn, grow, and expand your cultural awareness during your internship. By approaching the experience with an open mind and a willingness to connect, you can make a meaningful impact and develop valuable skills that will benefit you throughout your career.
I enjoyed meeting new interns and people from around the world and new connections with people from different backgrounds. I thoroughly enjoyed the hospital experience, it was very hands on and I learnt a lot from the students and doctors in Zanzibar. This internship has helped develop my confidence and communication skills as it has developed my ability to communicate with people that are of different cultures and languages to me. It was interesting to see how differently hospitals in Zanzibar operated compared to the UK and what things we had in common. Outside of the work aspect of the internship, I was able to immerse myself in the Swahili culture by having a great relationship with my host family and making friends with local people. I was also able to appreciate my surroundings and beautiful landscapes in Zanzibar. I would definitely recommend Intern Abroad HQ to others, as there's a whole host of opportunities to get involved in. Intern Abroad HQ co-ordinators/supervisors were also very organised and helpful throughout my internship.
During my internship, I was exposed to groups of mental health patients who were very new to me. I talked to them and did art and music therapy with them. In the process, I learned more about mental health patients and found that many of them are willing to share and communicate, especially with someone from a different country like me. Therefore, to some extent, this experience dispelled my fear of mental health patients, and I even began to try to find a way to communicate with them. Meanwhile, in this internship, I’ve gained a lot of help from professional psychologists. With their help, I learned how common mental illnesses manifest in practice and how a mental program works.
This internship was one of the best experiences of my life! I met incredible people, built strong relationships and friendships, and was able to explore the beautiful Zanzibar island. I interned for six weeks and every two weeks I rotated around different departments of the hospital, including the emergency department, maternity/pediatrics, and internal medicine/surgery. I really enjoyed rotating around different departments because I was able to witness, learn, and practice so many things! This internship really taught me so many things about how the healthcare system in Zanzibar works especially when you start comparing it to the healthcare system in the United States. It was definitely an eye-opener and really cool to see how they assess and treat patients with the limited resources they have. I am forever grateful for the hospital staff and my internship supervisors because this internship exceeded all my expectations and truly made me realize my passion and wanting to pursue a career in the medical field. My accommodation was everything I expected - clean, comfortable, and safe. The family I stayed with was wonderful and the meals were delicious! I also really appreciated that my placement was within five to ten minutes from where my internship was held! I really admired how helpful and approachable the Intern Abroad staff were. I felt supported by the team and really appreciated how efficient and organized everything was.
