My internship not only taught me about how the health care system works in Tanzania, but also how the people work, their job rhythms, views and opinions on daily issues. My favourite memory from the program has been seeing the women that I have been teaching so interested and willing to learn. I am no longer afraid to speak in public and think I am good at it! Now I want to encourage those wanting the same experience as me to do it! In terms of personal development, it has contributed a lot, since I had to adapt to a lot of different kinds of situations, people and culture.

Intern life in Tanzania was an adventure! I feel so much more empowered to intentionally seek new information and experiences. My internship tasks included observing clinicians, attending regular morning meetings to discuss the clinic's progress, and assisting with patient diagnosis and prescription in the mental health clinic. The language barrier I experienced forced me to focus more on how a patient spoke and their body language. This will greatly benefit my future career as a potential clinical psychologist, as it is a career which requires one to be good at reading people and knowing when to encourage individuals to open up. Getting to witness the different psychological cases in the diagnosis room was one of my most memorable experiences.

I really enjoyed being immersed in a completely different culture and figuring it out with the other interns. I enjoyed seeing Tanzanian culture firsthand and trying to speak Swahili with the locals. Communicating with people who do not speak English as a first language was challenging, but it was a very good experience for me personally. These are all skills I can take forward with me in my career. My accommodation was both clean and comfortable and I felt very safe as there was a staff member present at all times. The staff were excellent and helped with any questions we had. The guidance and support received from Intern abroad HQ was second to none. Any questions or concerns I had were answered in a timely manner.

This internship allowed me to develop my ambitions and gain a greater knowledge of the nursing field I want to pursue. I have been able to better understand how to care for neonatal babies and how important it is to also support mothers. My role in the internship was a nursing role, and I was able to use all my skills acquired in the UK to support the staff and integrate myself into the team. My skills shared and learnt aided me in becoming a productive member of the team, which helped me to support staff, parents and babies. I was also able to do ward rounds with the doctor, sharing my knowledge of respiratory distress syndrome and apnoea spells in neonates. The staff were friendly, engaging and enthusiastic about me achieving my goals and getting the best experience out of my internship. I was able to just be me and meet new people and thoroughly immerse myself in Tanzanian culture. I also gained greater confidence in my abilities, both professionally and socially, and now feel more confident in my clinical abilities. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and hope to pursue further internships.

My long term goal is to practice medicine as a Physician Assistant and this experience was enriching to learn and understand how medicine is practiced in Tanzania. I was placed with the surgical team at the Regional/Referral Hospital, and the entire team was very welcoming and the nicest people I have ever worked with. I immediately felt like I was part of a team engaging in cases and coming up with treatment plan(s) for each patient. I was able to learn about various diagnoses and assist in surgeries which still feels surreal and an opportunity I wouldn't get back home. Personally, I feel humbled to say the least. It was a challenging experience yet I feel more driven towards my career goals and hope to visit Tanzania again with more skillsets.

I really enjoyed getting involved in African culture and meeting so many people through the clinics I was involved with. My favorite memory of the program was attending the different clinics which included special needs, antenatal and sober houses. It was a brilliant experience being able to talk to people in the clinics, ask questions regarding their condition's and hear about their experiences. I feel more empowered in my field as I now have a lot more motivation to continue doing the work I was doing in Africa, and bring it to where I am living now. I would like to keep progressing in Psychology!
