SUU university students in Peru, semester abroad internship program with Intern Abroad HQ; with the text How to Turn Your 529 Plan Into a Global Internship Experience

What if your college savings plan could do more than just pay for your classes on campus? With the right structure, your 529 plan can help fund an international internship, giving you real-world experience, academic credit, and a life-changing adventure at the same time.

529 plans are designed to cover qualified higher education expenses. By completing an internship through Intern Abroad HQ, while enrolling as a non-degree seeking student and earning academic credit through Warren Wilson College, your program becomes an eligible educational expense. This makes Intern Abroad HQ one of the most affordable ways to use your 529 plan to study abroad and gain internship experience.

To use your 529 plan, you also need to enroll as a non-degree seeking student with Warren Wilson College in order for your funding to be accepted by an academic institution. The enrollment fee is $1650 USD, and this is what makes your internship abroad eligible for 529 plan use.

A Parent’s Perspective: “It was a no brainer.” 🏆

Allyson Kelley saw firsthand how powerful this opportunity can be:

“In the summer before his senior year, my son went to Costa Rica for a month. It was evident that the experience changed him for the better…he had some money in a 529 college savings account, so when we found out that we could use that account to fund his trip and he could get some college credit in the process, it was a no brainer.”

Her son didn’t just travel. He grew personally, gained direction, and earned credit toward his future.

When used for qualified higher education expenses, 529 plan withdrawals are generally federal tax-free and may also be state tax-free. However, tax rules can vary, so it’s always best to consult your 529 provider or tax professional.
