What recent interns said about their experience
Amazing experience! They were always checking in with me and making sure everything went well. The host family that I stayed with always made sure I had food and was comfortable. I loved everything about it
I especially enjoyed how hands-on this experience was. Working daily with the animals helped me to get even more comfortable in the field of animal healthcare, and expand my knowledge through working with a variety of different animals. Nancy and Jaime were wonderful hosts and encouraged me to explore Belize while also being focused on the animals. The meals that we got on weekdays were always very good and filling. Being taken around San Ignacio on the morning of my second day helped me to learn more about the area and feel more comfortable and better adjust. I immediately felt welcomed by the whole family and the other interns, and I could not have asked for a better experience!
I really enjoyed this internship both in the ways that I was able to make an impact on the farm, as well as broaden my experiences in another country. I had a lot of creative freedom in my project and was able to use my skills to make a lot of progress in the setup of their garden. Additionally, I learned a ton about methods of conducting field work that will likely support my future career. I also loved being in a new place and traveling to all of the beautiful sites in Belize. I feel much more confident going into possibly uncomfortable situations and trust my ability to be independent and have a good time without being too anxious or stressed.
I think I enjoyed the nature and tropics the most about this program for me. Being surrounded by tropical foliage that exudes everywhere in sight is beautiful and is nothing like the nature here in California. The farm and family running it is exactly who you'd want hosting interns and volunteers, they've seen it all because they've been hosting for so long, are so incredibly kind and understanding of the different cultures interns come from.
Working on the farm was so much fun and exactly the type of work I wanted to be doing during this type of internship. I was able to use and dirty my hands everyday working on restoring the aquifer behind the farm, I learned more about the process involved in restoring such habitat, along with the other processes needed alongside it to progress such as gathering seeds/saplings, soil health, and protecting the saplings from the cats that like to sleep in the planter boxes...
Because I was in Belize for 10 weeks I got to meet a lot of other interns doing the same or different programs, some of which I would see arrive and leave before I left. This was somewhat mentally taxing as meeting new people isn't my strongest trait, but that didn't really matter because basically all of the interns that I interacted with we're just as kind and caring as the family. I look forward to staying in touch with the host family and returning to Belize someday.
