What are the requirements to join?
Intern Abroad HQ Medical and Healthcare internships are available for participants with relevant training and experience. This may include pre-med, pre-nursing, pre-dental, and pre-health. Students who are already taking part in Medical/Nursing school (any year of study) and fully qualified professionals are also welcome!
What can pre-med school interns accomplish?
Under-graduates who have at least completed their third year in studies related to medicine, nutrition, nursing, or dentistry may apply for the Health & Medical internship programs in Guatemala and Costa Rica. The minimum duration requirement is 4 weeks and applicants must have intermediate Spanish language ability.
Don’t speak Spanish? ¡No hay problema!
Applicants with basic Spanish skills are eligible to apply for a Physician’s Assistant placement in Cusco, Peru. The minimum duration requirement is just two weeks. Interns with limited Spanish language skills are strongly encouraged to take Spanish language lessons, which the internship host organization will be happy to help arrange. Not only are they fun and affordable, lessons greatly enhance engagement through the cultural and learning experience.

Special Needs Care Internship
Do you have a patient, caring disposition to work with disabled individuals? While the nature of this work can be challenging, it may also be deeply rewarding and provide insight into careers related to caring, disability support, therapy and social work.

Language Therapy Internship
Undergraduate interns with special education, language therapy and/or speech pathology skills (including previous internship or shadowing experience, alongside a qualified Language Therapist) are able assist local teachers and provide specialized support to children with mental and/or motor delay.

Physiotherapy Internship
Entry level internship placements are available for current students, as well as more experienced applicants. Applicants with a background in social work, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, pre-med, psychology or physiotherapy are encouraged; however, interns are always placed according to their level of skill and experience.

Psychology Internship
The Psychology Internship placement provides a fantastic opportunity for students who’ve completed at least their first year of relevant studies. Program participants help in the capacity of a special education teacher’s assistant, where students experience difficulties with speech, language, thought processes or movement. In addition to assisting in the control of behaviour, participants may also conduct monitoring activities.

Dentistry Internship
Under-graduates who have at least completed their third year in studies related to dentistry may apply for the Dentistry program in Cusco, Peru. Alternatively, there is scope to participate on dentistry placements within the Health & Medical internship programs Guatemala and Costa Rica. General activities may focus on dental hygiene, education, and basic health checks, while working alongside qualified local professionals.

Midwifery Internship
For pre-med and current medical/nursing, this program aims to provide career insight and confidence into midwifery, while working alongside local professionals and receiving guidance. Tasks are related to pre-and post-delivery, Doula assistance, postpartum care, and ancestral Peruvian techniques for the well-being of mother and child.

Nutrition Internship
Students with a background in nursing/psychology/nutrition/public health, with an interest in nutrition initiatives, are welcome to gain career insight through the Nutrition internship program. Interns join efforts with a non-profit NGO, to support community outreach campaigns, monitoring and surveillance of nutritional rehabilitation, nutrition promotion and education, and the development of productive capacities.

What does the internship program cover?

To enhance cultural competency and professional development, interns additionally receive a guided reflection course. This course adds focus and purpose to internships, with a strong emphasis on career-preparedness. Weekly reflections are provided to guide journaling. Each introduce topics for consideration, learning objectives, and encourages critical thinking.
