Hi Elle! Tell us, what were you pleased to discover when you first arrived in Tanzania?
Despite the geographical and cultural differences between Tanzania and Scotland, I was pleasantly surprised by how warmly I was welcomed into both professional and social settings. Everyone demonstrated a genuine eagerness to connect, share stories, and offer assistance, which significantly eased my transition and made me feel at home. I anticipated a steep learning curve and cultural adjustment, but the actual immersion was more enriching than I expected. The pace of work, the nuances of legal practice and the warmth of the people left a profound impression on me from day one.
Tell us about your day to day, what tasks were you involved in?
In my role as a legal intern in Tanzania, I engaged in a range of activities both in the office and in the community. I assisted with legal research, supported the daily operations of the firm and additionally, I participated in community outreach initiatives, including visits to youth detention homes to observe rehabilitative practices, provided legal aid to disadvantaged women, and accompanied senior lawyers to court hearings. These experiences allowed me to apply legal theory to practical scenarios, contributing to community legal empowerment efforts, and gaining firsthand insight into the complexities of legal practice in Tanzania.
Has your internship helped you achieve any long term career goals?
My internship has broadened my perspective and skill set, preparing me for a future where I can make a meaningful impact. Observing the rehabilitative approach of these facilities has deepened my understanding of how different legal systems can better serve communities, which is crucial for my aspiration to improve access to legal aid and promote human rights. Ultimately, this internship has solidified my ambition to work internationally. I hope in the future I can contribute to promoting equality, and defending people’s rights. This role has not only prepared me for the immediate next steps in my career, but has also reinforced my commitment to a lifelong pursuit of justice and human rights on a global scale.
What advice would you give to future interns traveling to Tanzania?
My advice would be to approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Be respectful and observant of cultural norms and practices, taking time to understand and adapt to them. Learning basic greetings and key phrases in the local language can go a long way in building rapport and showing respect. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ask for help if you need it, you’re not in your normal environment and it will take time to adjust. Remember you’re there to learn.
Looking back on your time abroad, what would you consider your greatest memory?
My favorite memory from the program was the connections I made with other interns and accommodation staff, who were incredibly warm and welcoming. These friendships from various backgrounds added camaraderie to my experience. Together, we shared meals, and supported each other through the challenges and triumphs of our respective internships. Interacting with individuals from different backgrounds highlighted the importance of community, resilience, and adaptability. I feel a heightened appreciation for the diversity and complexity of cultures, including my own. These relationships made my time in Tanzania more enjoyable and provided a network of lifelong friends.
How has your internship left you feeling more empowered in your field?
After completing this internship, I feel significantly more empowered to be successful in my field. The hands-on experience provided me with practical skills and a deeper understanding of the legal issues marginalized communities face. Engaging directly with clients and working on real cases has enhanced my confidence in applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations. This awareness has highlighted the need for continuous learning and adaptability.
Having completed your internship, what’s next for you?
Professionally, I aim to secure a legal traineeship, gaining hands-on experience will allow me to apply the skills and insights I developed during my internship and further my commitment to social justice and advocacy. Personally, I want to continue building my cultural intelligence and empathy by traveling and working in diverse environments.
