Looking to amplify and refine his IT skills, Bradford University student Victor Chiokwe embarked on a 4 week Information Technology internship abroad in Valencia, Spain. Providing the unique opportunity to gain real-world experience, enhance critical thinking and develop problem solving skills, read on to find out how Victor’s IT internship played a crucial role in advancing his long-term career goals.
Hi Victor! What were some of your first impressions when you arrived in Spain?
Arriving in Valencia for my internship, I was filled with a blend of excitement and nervousness. The heat was a surprise, much hotter than I had anticipated. Adapting to Spanish cuisine was another adjustment; although rich and diverse, it was quite different from the food I was used to in the UK. However, I soon grew to love local dishes like paella and tapas.
Valencia is stunningly beautiful, with a sky so vibrant and days so bright that you are tempted to stay outside all day. The weekends were particularly exciting for me because they offered countless places to explore. Malvarrosa Beach, with its golden sands, is perfect for a day of relaxation. The City of Arts and Sciences, a remarkable complex designed by Santiago Calatrava, and the Oceanographic, Europe’s largest aquarium, are must-see attractions. Valencia Cathedral and the El Miguelete Tower offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history, while Colon Market, a modernist market turned gourmet food hub, provides a unique culinary experience. Ruzafa Neighborhood, known for its street art, trendy cafes, and lively nightlife, is another highlight.
The vibrant nightlife in Valencia stretches into the early hours, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. The city also boasts numerous outdoor seating areas where you can enjoy delicious local dishes. Valencia’s charm and warmth left such a lasting impression on me.
What role did you have as an Information Technology intern?
My responsibilities included managing and supporting a diverse team of interns, facilitating effective communication, and ensuring smooth integration into the company. I coordinated daily activities, organized and led team meetings, assisted in developing and refining technological solutions (including data analysis and workflow improvements) contributed to the creation of marketing strategies and branding efforts through social media and other channels.
My role improved overall team efficiency and cohesion. By facilitating effective communication and collaboration, I ensured that diverse perspectives were leveraged to drive innovation. My contributions to technological development and marketing strategies supported the organization’s growth.
How has your internship contributed towards your long-term career goals?
My internship has played a crucial role in advancing my long-term career goals. Working with different teams has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of how various business functions interact and contribute to overall organizational success. The experience of navigating and adapting to diverse team dynamics has improved my communication and problem-solving abilities.
Collaborating with departments such as IT, Data Analytics, Marketing, and Corporate Branding has enhanced my project management and leadership skills. Overall, the skills and insights gained from this internship have aligned closely with my career ambitions, setting me up for success in future roles that demand strong leadership, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
What were some of the cultural differences that made an impression?
I was surprised by the Spanish approach to work-life balance and how deeply it’s integrated into daily life. Coming from the UK, where the workday can often extend into the evening, I was stuck by the Spanish tradition of the siesta and the relaxed pace of life. What surprised me most was how effectively the Spanish manage to maintain productivity while also prioritizing rest and social connections. I quickly learned that the balance they have struck between work and relaxation enhances focus and productivity during working hours.
This experience challenged my perceptions of work-life balance and made me rethink my own approach to productivity. It showed me that a more relaxed, community-focused lifestyle doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing efficiency. It’s a lesson I plan to carry forward in my career, applying a more balanced approach to work, inspired by the Spanish way of life.
What advice would you give to future interns in Spain?
I would advise myself and others in a similar situation to stay flexible and open-minded. Be ready to adjust your expectations as you become more familiar with your role and the local culture. Building relationships and seeking feedback early can greatly enhance your experience. Embracing surprises and adapting to challenges can transform them into valuable learning moments. Before you arrive, aim to deepen your understanding of the local culture and workplace norms. Familiarizing yourself with these differences will make the transition smoother. Embracing patience and open-mindedness from the start, rather than expecting everything to align with my own habits, will also help!
What lasting impact has your internship experience had?
On one hand, I feel more empowered due to the skills and insights I gained. Leading cross-functional teams and working in a startup environment taught me how to manage ambiguity and adapt quickly, which are crucial skills in any dynamic field. I also developed a greater appreciation for work-life balance, learning how to integrate relaxation and social interaction into my professional routine for enhanced productivity and well-being. On the other hand, the challenges I faced have made me aware of the areas where I need further growth. This awareness has empowered me to seek additional training and experiences to address these gaps and build a more robust skill set. Overall, the experience has boosted my confidence in handling complex, multifaceted problems and has motivated me to continuously improve and adapt, enhancing my readiness for future challenges in my field.
