Hi Ash! How did this experience contribute to your future career goals?
Since I hope to work within the field of higher education in the future, I was happy to learn more about the student affairs and business side of the discipline. For instance: collecting, organizing, and distributing resources for students allowed me to become more familiar with the needed processes of providing support for such populations.
Some other tasks I was responsible for include:
- Researching and communicating with potential partner organizations.
- Supporting the organization of student activities.
- Assisting with administrative duties necessary to support the daily functions of the School.
Prior to my trip, I initially chose to go through Intern Abroad HQ due to its credibility and built-in support system, which I identified as important since it was going to be my first time going abroad. This was definitely the right decision as I found that both of those things shaped my experience to be as positive as it was.
How was multiculturalism supported in your internship placement?
Since my internship placement was at an English language school that served students from all over the world, it presented the unique opportunity to learn about an immensely diverse set of backgrounds. Each day, I would interact with someone whose culture contrasted with my own - leading me to gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for multiculturalism.
Not only did the students who I connected with daily supply me with knowledge and a sense of connection, but my colleagues who I worked alongside did so as well. Since the first day of my internship, I was regarded as a vital piece of the school’s puzzle in the form of supporting multiple departments through assigned tasks.
How did you practice effective time management during your internship?
I feel a lot more confident and capable professionally since I was able to gain more closely related experience through the internship, all while being in an unfamiliar environment and culture. Juggling the tasks of learning skills, systems, and the wider atmosphere was difficult at times, but overcoming the challenge ultimately led me to be more qualified and self-assured going into grad school and likely the profession later on.
The whole experience abroad certainly solidified my passion for travel, so doing more of it either nationally or internationally in the future is definitely on my bucket list. Professionally, it encouraged me to look into advising positions specifically in the study abroad realm during my master’s and potentially beyond as well!
Going on weekend trips to numerous cities and experiencing the nature trails, museums, and shops that Ireland had to offer was certainly a highlight of my stay. Additionally, I enjoyed the flexibility that the program offered—ultimately allowing me to fulfill my wishes of gaining both professional and personal experience.
What were the highlights of your time in Dublin?
Although doing the “touristy” things (i.e. going to the countless museums and castles within the city center) was very fun, I found the most value in exploring things and places that were a bit less known and extravagant on paper.
An example of this was my memorable visit to Woodland Trail on a sunny day over the weekend and seeing highland cows for the first time! The aspect of nature like this within Ireland awarded me with moments of calmness and ease, which at times was quite difficult to have while in bustling places of the city and crowded buses.
Another highlight was spending time with other interns within the program, who I shared numerous memories and laughs with. These times of sociality were important to me since they contributed to the work-life balance that I personally needed to fully experience my time abroad. A few of my favorite times with them were going to the Dublin Zoo and having a great Italian dinner at Dolce Sicily on South Anne Street.
