It’s so nice to meet you, Alexia! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, which is a really small town in Puerto Rico. I’m currently studying Criminal Justice with a minor in History in Washington DC. I really want to go to law school, so I was looking for a good Legal Practice internship opportunity to get some background experience before I commence further study. I saw an internship via Intern Abroad HQ as a good way to get more variety, perspectives and views within the field of law… and New York is New York! I’ve wanted to live here for a while, so what better place to intern with a law firm!

Why did you decide to intern through Intern Abroad HQ?

I came across Intern Abroad HQ and you had so many internship options and so many Law related internship opportunities. I had come across other providers in the past, but to me, they just didn’t seem as trustworthy. Intern Abroad HQ had so many positive reviews, guest blogs and helpful YouTube videos. Plus, I always received fast responses to emails from my program manager, which was really comforting!

What happened after you had confirmed your internship participation with Intern Abroad HQ?

Once I confirmed my spot and officially registered for my Legal Practice internship, I sent in my resume and cover letter. This was then reviewed by the local team, based in New York. I was offered three interviews with three separate law firms. Once completed, I was then offered a placement with my first choice of the three, which was incredibly exciting! It was too great an opportunity to turn down.

What have you gotten out of your internship experience so far?

I feel like my Legal Practice internship is an opportunity that’s going to be beneficial for me in the future. I’m learning so much already. Internships can be hard to secure, and really competitive for those with limited real world experience. From my internship I’ve been able to see what areas of law I like and don’t like. This helps to ensure that I’m better prepared for when I do go into law school, with the objective of pursuing the career path I enjoy most. Seeing first hand the life of a lawyer, what it consists of, and what they do every day, has been really interesting. I don’t think I would have been able to get an Legal practice or any other Law related internship opportunity like this on my own. I’m so grateful to have gained such value and support from Intern Abroad HQ. It has boosted my professional development and contributing to my career goals in the field of law.

What’s it been like to experience the city of New York?

It’s been a good experience! Living in such a big city, I’m being pushed to meet new people and become more independent. Being from such a small town in Puerto Rico, I’m so used to driving places with my Mom, and now I’m relying only on myself! I’m adapting and exploring my surroundings a lot. I love the movie theaters in New York so I’m actually off to watch a movie tonight! I love going to restaurants - I’m a massive foodie, so trying new restaurants is really fun for me. I’ve taken a paint class too! And I’ve just generally enjoyed walking around the city. There are so many things to look at, see and explore!

What advice would you give to others considering the same, or a similar opportunity?

Keep an open mind. An internship - regardless of what field you’re in - will go a long way in allowing you to make new friends at work and while you’re out and about in the city. Take a chance! I feel like in New York you have to learn how to be alone, which is a great step towards furthering your independence and adaptability. These are both two desirable characteristics when applying for any job! Trust your instincts and explore! It’s easier than you think!
