What it’s like to do a Virtual Marketing Internship out of Spain

Meet Aaron from Los Angeles, who is interning on Intern Abroad HQ’s Marketing & Communications remote internship out of Spain.

Here, he takes us behind the scenes of his digital marketing internship with the Valencia based soccer club, Villarreal CF…

I chose to intern with Intern Abroad HQ because from the beginning, they were very honest, responsive and flexible. After I applied for the internship, I was contacted by Dallas from Intern Abroad HQ and she helped me along with the enrollment process. My first choice was a Marketing & Communications internship with the professional soccer team known as Villarreal CF in Spain. After I was guaranteed placement in the program, it was a no brainer for me because I have always had a passion for soccer. I have a bachelor’s degree in Communications and this internship has allowed me to get exposure in the sports industry for the first time ever, at a global level. I am very happy with Intern Abroad HQ’s ability to work with me and allowing me to gain this once in a lifetime opportunity.

The benefits of a remote internship

One of the benefits of interning remotely is the easy accessibility to your manager. They are more likely to view and respond to your questions instantly since everyone is working from home during this time period. Easy accessibility leads towards more productive and meaningful discussions. Being able to work from a place of comfort allows for a greater level of concentration and flexibility which in return affects your overall work. All the interns of Villarreal CF are on a Whatsapp group with our managers and we communicate through there. We also email each other back and forth while working on new projects.

Virtual Marketing Internship out of Spain

Interning remotely with an international organization in Spain

This internship has allowed me to get a better understanding of how the sports industry in Spain functions and I have compared it to other sports leagues in the US. Being an American from Los Angeles, I was able to offer my own input on how certain American leagues utilize social media and marketing and how we can implement those ideas in Spain. My goal coming into this internship was to gain a foundation of international marketing and communications and this internship has allowed me to do that.

Developing language skills alongside a remote internship

I already had a solid foundation of Spanish before starting this internship, but I am taking this opportunity to further my Spanish language skills. I am taking advanced Spanish classes with a Spanish company called Euroace who work alongside Intern Abroad HQ. Students with different backgrounds that are from places like Brazil, Holland, France and Japan take the online Spanish classes which makes it much more diverse. Euroace has excellent teachers that make learning Spanish much more intriguing and fun.

I feel that my internship has enhanced my employability, as recruiters are always looking for an applicant to stand out from the rest. Being able to gain international marketing experience is something that can easily set you apart from other applicants. Working in an international media market like Spain and identifying global trends in the sports industry helps your resume stand out.

This internship has allowed me to get my foot into the sports industry and work out what I want to do next. I fully expect to pursue my passion and gain employment with a professional sports team after my internship is complete.
