All Intern Abroad HQ programs include a guided reflection course, which combines personal development with professional competency building. Interns receive weekly reflection modules to complete during their program, which foster the acquisition of essential soft skills for employability and a resilient career. Each reflective journaling task introduces a new topic, presents learning objectives, and provides specific prompts that inspire and guide the learning process.

Intern Abroad HQ does not award grades for the completion of our internship programs, but interns can be supported to independently arrange academic credit through their home educational provider. Upon completion of the internship duration and reflection course, interns receive a portfolio as documentation of their experience. This includes a certificate of internship completion, alongside a summary of the internship goals, skill development, highlights, and a compilation of the reflection work.

Internships in Prague begin every Monday and interns may choose to spend a minimum of 4 weeks, up to a maximum of 12 weeks. (Exceptions to start date availability may occur when start dates are closed due to public holiday disruptions or if the program has already reached capacity). Less internship positions are available during July and August, as many companies are affected by summer vacation activities.

Airport pick up and accommodation are included in the Program Fee. The accommodation is covered from the Sunday night before the Monday start date - interns are required to arrive no later than the Sunday before their Monday start date, as all orientations are held on Mondays.

All participants fly into the Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG), in order to receive their airport pick up and be transported to the accommodation by a pre-arranged driver. Upon arrival to the accommodation, interns are met by a local team member, who will greet them and assist with settling in. Note that all participants are advised not to book flights until they have first registered to confirm their internship placement.

Orientation takes place on the Monday start date and covers important details for the internship, including introductions, information about culture, customs, rules, expectations, safety, language lessons, cultural excursions, and more. Interns join their placement on the following day.

If you are planning to spend time in Prague prior to your internship and will not require an airport pick up, we can arrange an alternative pick up from another location within the central city.

All interns in Prague are accommodated in dormitory rooms, within a sharehouse. These living arrangements make it possible to develop friendships with other interns and visiting students, while allowing for a sense of independence, within a safe and supported environment.

Bedding is provided and guests have access to their own lockers within the rooms, for safe-keeping personal items. Shared dormitory rooms typically accommodate between 4-8 guests at any given time. It is important to be aware that sometimes the dormitories may be mixed-gender but efforts are typically made to ensure that rooming arrangements are same-sex, whenever possible.

Bathrooms are shared and common areas - such as balconies, roof tops, BBQ areas, and lounge/TV rooms - provide excellent opportunity for socializing with others and taking shared meals. WiFi is available but note that the speed can sometimes be slow, compared to what you might be used to accessing at home.

Accommodation upgrades are available at an additional cost, for those who would prefer to stay in a single room within the sharehouse, for added privacy. Interns who are interested in arranging an upgrade may speak with their Internship Program Manager and note that upgrade options are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

All sharehouse accommodation is typically located within apartment style buildings, where a general entrance hall features the front reception office, for handling arrivals and departures. Upon accommodation check in, a security deposit must be paid, which is fully refundable upon check out (assuming that no damages, lost keys, or services need to be settled). This amount is typically 5,000 Czech Koruna (approximately US$230 or 200 Euro). It can be taken care of upon arrival through either Visa, Mastercard, or cash deposit.

Laundry services are available at the accommodation and each loads cost approximately 30 Czech Koruna (about 1 Euro). Laundry services can be paid for at the time, or you may prefer to accumulate the charge and have it taken out of your security deposit, so that the remaining balance is returned to you upon check out.

Student dormitory accommodation is typically located within 45 minutes walking distance to the local team’s office (where the Czech language lessons also take place) - or a short drive away via taxi, uber or public transportation. The maximum commute time to internship placements is usually between 30-45 minutes by public transportation (metro, tram or bus). We recommend budgeting approximately 700 Czech Koruna for a monthly ticket for using public transport (approximately US$31).

It is important to note that internships in Prague do not include meals. Prague is one of Europe’s most affordable destinations and there is a fantastic culinary scene to explore - whether you’re on a budget or wanting to splurge, there is an excellent range of options for every intern. Local restaurants typically offer special lunch menus during the week, for about 120 CZK (options can range up to €7.00 / US$8, including a drink - a cup of coffee is about €2.30 / US$2.70). Although brand name groceries and imported goods may cost a little more, restaurant food and anything locally made can be very economical. A classic Czech meal at a restaurant (e.g. meat, sauce, and dumplings) may be about 140 CZK (€5.50 / US$6.40). Typical Czech meals are quite hearty and rich! Come prepared to try delicious rich meat dishes, with quality breads, sauces, dumplings, soups, stews and potato salads.

Czech language lessons

Fluency in the Czech language is not a requirement for interns in Prague, however basic Czech skills are strongly recommended. Keep in mind that although interns are not required to speak the Czech language, a language barrier may still be encountered to a certain extent. Interns should be prepared for the very natural and normal frustration of not always understanding what is being said around them. Most interns are able to have a successful internship experience and it is essential to come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier, as opposed to being intimidated by it.

We encourage all interns to take advantage of the opportunity to learn some beginner lessons before and during their program, as this will enhance enjoyment of being in Prague, while developing professional social, and cultural competencies. Affordable and certified Czech lessons are offered directly through our local team and can be arranged once internship participation has been confirmed. The language instruction is offered through a member of AJŠ - Association of Language Schools and Agencies of the Czech Republic.

Lessons can be taken in conjunction with the internship program (morning lessons, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - allowing the afternoon free for internship activities). Otherwise, interns are welcome to arrive prior to their internship start date and take dedicated lessons for a week or so, before commencing the internship.

Weekends and travel

Prague is wonderful to explore - it’s a very walkable city and many sights can be seen as you spend time wandering through the historical streets. As you stroll through the medieval cobblestone lanes, you’ll quickly understand how the city earned its nickname as “The City of 100 Spires”. From the sprawling grounds of Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, down to Charles Bridge, the towers, and the exceptional astronomical clock, if you have an eye for craftsmanship and beauty, you’ll be amazed at every turn.

The city’s architecture has survived a tumultuous past within European history, and still contains one of earth’s most immaculate displays of architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, Cubist, Neo-Classical and ultra-modern styles. It’s worth taking a guided walking tour of the city to have them pointed out to you, so that you can gain a heightened appreciation of the cityscape.

Our local team in Prague operate licensed tourism operations and are available to arrange quality tours and professional excursions, at preferable rates. We recommend speaking to them first for advice about things to see and do. They have the best local tips that will ensure you make the most out of your time in the Czech Republic, while also getting great value out of your spending money.

In addition to exploring Prague, remember that within the Czech Republic there are other UNESCO World Heritage sites to explore, including the historical centre of Český Krumlov and Telč, as well as the Archbishop’s Chateau and gardens in Kroměříž. Ask the local team about excursions to see other beautiful and interesting cities and townships.
