Internship details

Boost your career prospects by developing your Marketing & Communications skills working with exciting start-up companies in Japan. Many placements have a global mindset, and focus on foreign markets and international sales. Remote interns can learn about social media marketing, content, SEO, business development and more!

This is a remote internship you can undertake virtually from home. If you would prefer to intern abroad, click here to explore destinations that offer placements related to Business.

Japan’s business sector is highly respected around the world, and the chance to complete a virtual internship with a startup company in Tokyo will really make your resume stand out!

As a virtual intern, you can be placed with a range of startup companies in a broad spectrum of different industries. Your exact role as an intern is customized to suit you, meaning your own skills and interests will help to design an internship that is relevant and engaging, and sets you up for the Marketing & Communications career you want!

Your duties can vary based on your specific placement, but can include:

  • Social media account management
  • Writing blogs
  • Search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Conducting market research
  • Business development
  • Translating content to English (if appropriate)
  • Providing sales support

As a remote intern, you’ll be in regular contact with your supervisor, who is based in Japan, through emails and video conferences. Your supervisor will play an active role in providing feedback, assistance and guidance to help to cement your learning and improve your skills. This internship is conducted in English, or in Japanese with the agreement of your supervisor.

In all cases, interns should expect that the initial phase of their remote internship will focus on gaining some introductory knowledge. You may start by gaining an understanding or overview of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.

Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

If you have a dream career you want to chase, or are lacking experience and unable to travel, I really recommend a remote internship with InternAbroad HQ! Exceptional guidance and support, my Program Manager was always available, and I really felt she was approachable with concerns that I had. All the information I needed was conveniently on the website, and if not, contacting my Program Manager and receiving a prompt reply really made the process so much easier. What I enjoyed most about this internship was working with my Japanese supervisor remotely and putting my marketing knowledge into action. It was so great and satisfying to use all my prior knowledge and ambitions to run and help manage the social media account. What I enjoyed the most was actually seeing the results of my work coming out and seeing the growth of the Instagram account everyday. This internship has really contributed to my development through making me more confident with new people. This is even better because I am more confident with new people around the world. I also now have practical experience of marketing, with statistics that I achieved which I can use as examples in my CV and interviews in the future.

The first day of my remote internship was a mixture of anxiety and excitement. After my orientation with the host organization, I felt a lot more relaxed and eager to start! They made me feel welcome and part of the team. My role was centred around producing social media content and encouraging growth. Having now completed my internship, I feel more prepared to assertively enter the communications industry and find my place in a remote working environment. My best advice for others considering a similar experience, always keep an open line of communication with your supervisor and team. Always offer input and suggestions on how to resolve problems.
