Education internships in Bali can span placements among public, private, international and vocational schools. Internship placements are matched to resume, study level, and internship length. Bali offers public and private schooling, as well as several “international” schools. They can offer a variety of curricula such as the national Indonesian curriculum, British Cambridge, International Baccalaureate (IB), Australian, and Montessori programs. Given the importance of Bali’s tourism economy, programs related to hospitality and tourism vocations are also prominent.

For Education interns, placement assignments will vary, according to review of your resume and current level of studies and experience. If you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory and “assistance” focused role. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration.

Interns wishing to teach English will need to ensure that their own English language ability is at a native speaking level. However, there is availability to assist with Education themes (in English), across a broad range of topics, suitable for Education interns of various levels and abilities.

In line with child safeguarding standards, Education interns must have the ability to provide a safe, supportive, and reliable presence. Interns will be required to tasks without impairment from any health condition that could reasonably compromise judgment, reliability, or the safety of others. This includes the ability to demonstrate sound judgment, uphold professional standards of dress, maintain emotional stability in a professional setting, and communicate clearly and respectfully. This will be strictly monitored by internship supervisors or other placement staff.

Note that some Education internship placements have a religious affiliation (Hindu or Christian) - especially placements provided through Children’s Charity Organizations or Afterschool Learning Centers for Disadvantaged Youth. You are welcome to express preferences and advise if you do not wish to be placed with an educational institution which has a religious affiliation. In all cases, flexibility is required, since internship preferences are subject to availability.

Do I need to speak Indonesian or Balinese for this internship?

No. Indonesian or Balinese language proficiency is not a requirement to join an Education internship in Bali. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it.

Academic Schedule & Holidays

The academic year in Bali generally runs from August/July to June/July, following a Northern Hemisphere calendar with four terms or semesters, though some international schools may have different arrangements. The longer school holiday, between semesters, runs from late June to early July. Students will usually have testing toward the end of their semesters. The winter break is around February/March. Major closures include annual observances for Nyepi and Idul Fitri.

The internship schedule will be dynamic based on the school’s needs and interns can expect some diverse exposure to education and teaching responsibilities. Education internships are available year-round, as additional program activities will operate during any academic breaks.

Typical Schedule

• Up to 8 hours per day, Mon-Fri or Tues-Sat. The regular internship schedule may be disrupted around public holiday dates and important religious festivals; during which, interns may expect to have additional free time.
