Internship details

Education Internships provide students, teachers and young professionals with active experience in both lesson planning and English-language speaking classroom instruction. If you’re committed to providing quality education in a positive learning environment, this is for you!

This is an in-country internship, with accommodation and select meals included. You can explore remote Education & Youth Development internships, if you are looking for an internship program that you can undertake from home.

As a teaching intern, come prepared to assist across multiple subjects, including Math, Science, History, and English. The internship is designed to provide you with a comprehensive teaching experience, helping you gain a deeper understanding of the educational system in Nepal while also enhancing your skills as an educator.

You’ll be tasked with creating lesson plans tailored to the students’ needs, delivering lessons, and providing classroom management. Throughout your internship, you’ll have opportunities for professional development through workshops and training sessions aimed at improving your teaching practices.

Interns assist to support and collaborate with experienced teachers, who will offer feedback and guidance, allowing you to grow both personally and professionally. This is a dynamic internship where you’ll get the chance to teach, interact with students, and actively contribute to the school’s mission to educate and inspire.

Interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge, to build an understanding of what you can develop, learn, and contribute. Interns are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback, so that your supervisor(s) understands how you’re progressing and can assist to develop your internship accordingly. Interns should expect that a language barrier can be encountered to a certain extent. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it.

Academic Schedule & Holidays

The internship schedule will be dynamic based on the school’s needs and interns can expect a well-rounded exposure to the full spectrum of teaching responsibilities. Daily teaching sessions will take place around student meal times (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

In Nepal, the academic year is divided into terms, with breaks between them, including a winter break in February/March and a summer break in June/July. The most significant school holidays align with major national festivals and the end of academic terms. These are traditionally scheduled from mid March through late April and from late September through early October.

Exceptions to the regular schedule can arise throughout the year on public holiday dates. On some public holidays, if schools are closed, alternative educational activities may be held at other locations. Alternative activities, held on public holidays or during traditional academic breaks, may be open to students at varying levels of education.

On weekends, you’re free to explore iconic sites like Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Stupa, and even plan a trip into the Himalayas.

Arrival and Orientation

Internships in Kathmandu, Nepal, begin every Monday of the year. Exceptions to this schedule may be made to this when start dates are shifted to avoid holiday disruptions, or closed when the program has already reached capacity. Interns may choose to spend a minimum of 4 weeks, up to a maximum of 12 weeks. Airport pick-up and accommodation are included in the Program Fee.

The accommodation is covered from the Sunday night before the Monday start date - interns are required to arrive no later than the Sunday before their Monday start date.

The typical port of entry is the Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. Airport pick up, as included in the internship program fee, is provided from this airport. Upon arrival, interns will be transferred to the accommodation. If you are planning to spend time independently in Nepal prior to the internship and will not require an airport pick up, we can discuss alternative arrival logistics.

Orientation covers important details for your internship, including introductions, information about culture, customs, rules, expectations, safety, cultural excursions, and more. Your specific internship placement orientation will follow the general orientation, as you’ll be shown how to travel to and from your internship and be introduced to the team you’ll be joining.

The last night of the accommodation is the Friday night of the final week, leaving interns free to depart on Saturday. Extra nights of accommodation can be arranged in advance, if requested, and are subject to availability. Return transportation to the airport is not included in the internship program fee but local coordinators can assist you to make arrangements, upon request.

Please note that all participants are advised not to book flights until they have first registered to confirm their participation and internship placement details.

Accommodation and WiFi

All interns in Kathmandu are accommodated within a dedicated guest house. There are three secured houses utilized for this purpose - two are situated within the same compound and the other is just a minute’s walk away. They are located in the northern urban area of the city, within the Tokha municipality. Nearby amenities include a range of conveniences, such as grocery stories, laundromats, restaurants, banks, ATMs, gyms, and pharmacies.

Bedding and furnishings are provided. In most cases, between four to six guests can be accommodated per bedroom. Bedroom allocations are single-sex, although the houses themselves can accommodate mixed genders. Bedrooms are lockable and guests have access to their own private lockers. Common areas, such as living and kitchen areas are shared.

For those who would prefer to secure a private bedroom within the guest house, this can be arranged in advance, for an additional cost. Please ask us about this in advance if you’re interested, as accommodation upgrades are subject to availability. Any requests to exclude the accommodation service from your internship experience, in order for you to make independent arrangements, must be discussed and confirmed in advance. No program fee discounts are available for accommodation exclusions.

A range of bathroom facilities are available within the houses. Some bathrooms may be attached to bedrooms, as single-gender bathrooms. However, there are also bathrooms available which are intended to be common-use.

Basic WiFi is available at the accommodation and travelers can also make data arrangements for their own devices. Please note that the accommodation WiFi may not be used excessively for streaming/gaming, as this will exceed the limit. Guests will be encouraged to purchase your own data for heavy internet usage. Laundry can be done at local Laundromats, for an additional fee.

Centrally located, many interns may find that their assigned internship placements are within walking distance from the accommodation. Walking distance can vary, between 5-25 minutes. In the event that a longer commute is necessary (up to approx. 30 minutes via vehicle) public transportation or taxis can be utilized. A one-way public transportation cost could be around 25-30 Nepalese Rupees (around 20 cents USD). Otherwise, a private taxi could cost up to 600 Nepalese Rupees (about $4.50 USD).

Please note that the accommodation pictured in the photo gallery of this webpage is provided as an example. Since we may work with more than one guest house (depending on capacity), the exact room that you’re assigned may differ slightly from the example photos that you see. Rooms sizes, along with storage space, may also vary.

Meals

Internships in Nepal include two meals per day - daily breakfast and dinner - provided via the internship accommodation. The accommodation also supplied filtered drinking water.

Examples of breakfast dishes include pancakes, seasonal fruits, Tibetan Bread with jam or peanut butter, eggs, oats, yogurt, muesli. Examples of dinner dishes include Dal Bhat with meat (Nepalese Lentil Curry), momos (steamed or fried dumplings), Chow Mein, fried rice, spaghetti, pasta, salads, beans, mixed vegetables, and Phale pastries. For each meal, the menu can vary, and beverages such as tea and juice are available.

You will be asked to advise of any special dietary requirements (intolerances and/or allergies) in advance. Please be prepared to discuss this with the team in-country as well. In all cases, please expect that the included meals may differ from what you’re used to eating at home. For extra snacks, treats and meal supplementations, we always recommend that you budget accordingly.

Lunch is not included through the internship program. Meals in Nepal can be very affordable when purchased from local establishments. Hearty, healthy meals can cost as little as US$4. Depending on how often you indulge beyond the basic local fare, you might budget between US$30 - US$70 per week, for lunches and extra snacks.

We recommend that interns chat with local coordinators and internship colleagues for tips on recommended eateries in their area. Locals will be proud to make recommendations and share their favorite places with you. Exploring the culinary scene can be one of the most rewarding (and delicious) aspects of international travel!
