Internship details

Gain in-depth insight into the complexity of the political situation in Israel and Palestine, and assist with advocacy work for disadvantaged communities. Interns help local NGOs with political analysis and networking, and join communications and PR activities to raise awareness of discrimination issues.

This is a remote internship you can undertake virtually from home. Click here to view in-country Law & Human Rights Support internships, if you would prefer to intern abroad.

This virtual internship is perfect for individuals interested in human rights and anti-racism issues and wishing to gain practical experience in the challenges of combating discrimination and advocating for minorities.

Ethnic minorities, women, children, disabled people and immigrants all face daily battles for equality in Israel. Participants in this remote internship in Human Rights and Anti-Racism can make a tangible difference to the lives of people from these disadvantaged backgrounds. You’ll be placed in one of 40 NGOs forming a network of advocacy for discriminated groups all around Israel, supporting local staff with awareness, fundraising and advocacy wherever it’s most needed.

Interns assist ethnic groups including Palestinian Arabs, Ethiopian Jews, Mizrahi/Oriental Jews, and Russian and African immigrants. Political and societal norms in Israel legitimize racism towards these groups, resulting in violence, profiling, oppression, stereotyping and incitement. Interns are given tasks from your supervisor and work to your own schedule to ensure deadlines are met. You’ll need to accommodate regular online meetings with your supervisor to update progress, be given new tasks and raise any questions or challenges.

In all cases, interns should expect that the initial phase of their remote internship will focus on gaining some introductory knowledge. You may start by gaining an understanding or overview of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.

Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

This internship has aligned in every way with my long-term goals. Not only did this internship boost my chances of entering university, it also makes me better suited to my dream field of study: international relations. My favorite memory from the internship was my second meeting with my supervisor. During this meeting, they told me their experience as a Arab-Palestinian Israeli citizen. The story was raw, sometimes tragic, sometimes triumphant, always inspiring. Overall, it served to bond the two of us early-on, which boosted our success and compatibility down the road. Working with an issue as complicated as the one featured in my internship (the Israeli-Palestinian conflict) is excellent training in listening to multiple sides of a story, a critical skill in any diplomatic position, which I aspire to one day hold.

I have gained valuable experience in interning for an NGO dedicated to dealing with one of the most fiercely disputed areas of conflict in the world. I feel empowered that my experience will benefit my future career aspects in this particular field of work as I want to pursue a career in the area of conflict resolution. My role as an intern helped me to understand the dynamics of interning for a foreign NGO as a Westerner. It equipped me with the ability to recognise that all NGOs have specific development programmes tailored for their social and geo-political environment. The research I accomplished at the host organisation was distinct in its nature and I can apply similar methods of research for studying areas of conflict. My supervisor was very accommodating and allowed me flexibility with my working hours (day or night), due to the two-hour time difference between Israel-Palestine and the UK.

This internship has taught me a lot about what it means to take charge and really give my all on something for a cause that I believe in - it’s given me the confidence to believe in my ideas and words. It helped a lot that I had such a supportive team with me every step of the way. I definitely learned that I get out as much as I put in. I’ve had the opportunity to work on some phenomenal projects with this team that have been extremely rewarding and enlightening, so I’ve had the opportunity to learn a lot about working with an NGO, writing proposals, how applying for grants work, and other things related to this industry. It’s been very helpful in my journey towards finding a career path. I feel empowered knowing that there are numerous opportunities available for me, and that there are actors and organizations that are trying to make the world a better place and working towards or on causes I’m passionate about. It’s very inspiring. Also, working with an organization that really champions womens’ voices has been very exciting and empowering to be a part of.

I have a lot more self-assurance than I had before this internship. My favorite part of the internship was getting to edit a UN report alongside human rights professionals. This moment felt surreal. I feel so happy that I had the privilege of helping such an important movement and I feel like I have such a purpose because of it. It filled me with confidence as I knew more about the conflict, intersectionality and the work that goes into submitting one of these reports. I would advise myself and others about starting this internship to come in with a completely open mind.

During my remote internship, my main role was to educate and raise awareness of the Internally displaced. I also sought to facilitate a coordinated approach in bringing a range of local organisations together around the core issues of this project. My long term goal is to work as an International Human Rights Lawyer. I would like to work in developing countries and represent individuals and groups whose human rights have been suppressed. My remote Human Rights and Anti-Racism internship out of Israel provided an enhanced understanding of international law and politics and the interconnected relationship between the two. It has also provided the opportunity for me to enhance my research skills and to conduct pertinent case studies on nations and their history. This in turn has provided me with a better understanding and education of international legal principles. My favourite take away from the internship has been learning about an issue of global importance and helping to educate and raise awareness of an issue that needs addressing if justice and human rights are to prevail. I feel so much more empowered in my field having completed my internship because I have greater engagement with the international community. I have acquired more knowledge about global geo-political issues and feel like I possess more of the tools needed to navigate international humanitarian issues and problems.
