This remote education internship out of Tanzania is an opportunity to support a teacher in Africa in their everyday work. This is an excellent way to gain experience within an educational setting from your home, with mentoring from a local teacher. You will be greatly appreciated by Tanzanian teachers, who are often in charge of classes of up to 70 students and face the challenges of being under-resourced.
Online education interns help local teachers to prepare lessons, worksheets and activities in accordance with the local curriculum, marking students’ work and giving constructive feedback, and assessing learning success. You’ll be required to assess students’ developmental levels via their educational tasks and assessments and draft supplementary learning plans and resources where needed.
Participants on this remote education internship will receive feedback from the local teacher on your lessons, including grading and personal development advice. Interns can evaluate the success of their own lesson plans and see how different approaches maximize learning. Please note that a lack of technology within most Tanzanian classrooms means remote education internships do not involve teaching students directly. However, this benefits remote interns by ensuring a flexible schedule, as it is not a requirement to participate in exact accordance with the Tanzanian timezone.
Virtual internships in education from Tanzania are available at elementary school, middle school and high school levels, and where possible, interns can request to be placed with students of a certain age. Internship activities are conducted in English language and focused on English language teaching. Other subjects are taught in the local language. Interns at middle school and high school levels may be able to assist with other subjects, where students have a higher proficiency level of English.
In all cases, interns should expect that the initial phase of their remote internship will focus on gaining some introductory knowledge. You may start by gaining an understanding or overview of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

What recent interns said about their experience
This internship has meant a lot to me. When I was provided my placement, I was so excited for many reasons. It was with an organization dedicated to education, founded by a woman, in its first years. It was the perfect placement for me. I've learnt how to connect with the students, how to adapt, problem solve and improvise, using the resources available to me. I loved feeling so close to the kids I worked with, even though It was a remote internship. Every hour of work was worth it, and it helped me to better understand my strengths and weaknesses. It was a fulfilling experience, and having the opportunity to work with professionals in the education field was amazing. I feel much more confident about myself and what I can do. I have a long way to go, but now I know I can bring something to the table.
Before I started this teaching internship, I expected it to be challenging! However, these worries were all overcome after I talked to my supervisor - I think future interns should be aware of this! Through chatting with my supervisor, she explained to me how the lessons will work (one of the teachers was to be my translator) and she reassured me of all the schedules. I felt so much more comfortable and confident after this initial communication. I believe this was such a wonderful experience as I want to pursue an education degree in the future (and likely for my career as well)! The role definitely enhanced my enthusiasm for teaching and pursuing education, especially where able to assist people with limited access to resources and privilege. Aside from providing me with a greater sense of motivation within this career field, the internship helped me to develop many practical skills. For example, skills such as responsibility, time-management, communication and being patient. This internship increased my confidence and gave me a great sense of responsibility and enthusiasm.
