The construction industry in Tanzania is booming, and this virtual engineering internship offers the chance to be involved in a range of projects at various stages. Remote internships out of Africa involve working in challenging climate and cultural conditions, and engineering interns can have practical experience with engineering companies in both Dar es Salaam and the capital city, Arusha.
As an online engineering intern, you can help with projects from highways and roads, to bridges, hydraulics, geotechnical, structural and environmental engineering. Opportunities to intern with civil engineers, professional architects, and project managers mean this is a chance to get real-life experience to help set up your engineering career.
Virtual engineering interns can gain highly relevant experience in project management, stakeholder management, and using engineering software. You can get involved in assisting with AutoCAD designs, proposal and report writing, doing supplier research, making architectural renderings, preparing project presentations with visualizations, making client offers, and preparing project budgets.
Your duties on a remote engineering internship will always depend on what stage different projects are at, so a flexible mindset and willingness to contribute to any task will help to maximize your experience.
In all cases, interns should expect that the initial phase of their remote internship will focus on gaining some introductory knowledge. You may start by gaining an understanding or overview of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

What recent interns said about their experience
As an intern who completed a remote internship at my host organization, I found the experience to be empowering and valuable. The remote internship contributed toward my long-term goals by providing hands-on experience and exposure to the industry. Through this role, I had the opportunity to work on real projects, to interact with industry professionals, and gained a deeper understanding of the field. Specific skills or learnings from this internship experience that could directly be applied to a future role or career path include project management, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration. For example, I developed skills in project planning, stakeholder management, and team coordination, which are all transferable skills that are valuable in a wide range of careers. Additionally, I have learned about the industry-specific technologies, processes, and regulations, which have expanded my knowledge and understanding of the field. In retrospect, I would advise myself (and others in a similar position) to actively seek out opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge gained from the internship in real-world scenarios. This can help to build confidence, demonstrate your abilities to others, and provide a foundation for future career growth.
This remote internship role of shadowing and learning from experts in construction management helps me gain knowledge in the areas I plan on managing or working with. It has been an introduction to construction - at the moment, I am uncertain about what area of construction I want to go into. However, this internship is preparing me to have knowledge in those areas. Through this internship, I have learned how to read and understand architectural and structural drawings which are the most important documents in construction. These documents allow construction to occur. Therefore, no matter the area that I pursue, this internship is valuable. One of the tasks I have been involved with has been creating architectural drawings on AutoCAD. These drawings were of a school classroom from multiple views. Another task has been researching construction concepts then comparing it to construction in Tanzania. This is my first experience in an online environment and it is very beneficial since this pandemic has shifted many industries into an online workplace. It is important to follow-up and maintain communication outside of this new online workplace.
