Accommodation and WiFi
The program fee for internships in London includes your accommodation. Also included in your program fee is an accommodation security deposit of US$1,612. If no damage has been caused during your internship, this security deposit will be refunded directly to you by the local accommodation coordinator at the end of your stay. This is handled at the discretion of accommodation coordinator, who will assess facilities upon your check-out to ensure that no damage has been incurred to the apartment and its property.
Interns are accommodated in clean and comfortable, self-contained and fully furnished apartments. Bedding and furnishings are provided, as well as common areas such as lounge, kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. Standard amenities include whiteware (i.e. washing machine, stovetop, fridge, microwave) and clean linen (i.e. bed sheets and pillows). Accommodation includes WiFi access. All apartments are cleaned at least once weekly, maintained by in-house staff, and have a 24-hour emergency line. (Cleaners will not enter bedrooms).
In most cases, between two to six guests can be accommodated per apartment. The majority of apartment buildings used for the program accommodation do not have the facilities for single rooms. Therefore, all interns should expect to share a bedroom. All bedrooms will be shared with other program participants of the same gender (in twin or triple bedrooms). However, the apartment itself may share common areas / living arrangements with the opposite sex.
When it comes to getting around, London is divided into “zones” which are numbered from 1 through 9. “Zone 1” is the city center and “Zone 9” refers to the further outskirts of the city. The internship accommodation is located throughout Zones 1 and 2, so you can be assured easy access to transport links, tourist attractions, various universities and businesses. In fact, most visitors to London are inclined to stay within Zones 1 and 2, as this is where the main attractions of the city center are located.
All apartments are within an approx. 10-minute walk of an Underground station, with many being within just five minutes. All apartments are also within a few minutes’ walk of a bus stop. The city is relatively flat and there are plenty of public bicycles available for rent in different docking points throughout the city. Interns may also opt to simply walk during the daytime and enjoy the sights of the city! The commute times between accommodation and internship placements vary and it depends on your chosen mode of transportation as well. The travel time on public transportation may usually be approx. 30 to 40 minutes.
For private accommodation, alternative living arrangements can be requested and arranged in advance, for an additional upgrade fee. This is subject to availability, so please enquire in advance.
Please note that the accommodation pictured in the photo gallery of this webpage is provided as an example. Since we work with more than one apartment, the exact accommodation that you’re assigned may differ from the photos. However, you can expect a similar standard and similar amenities, to what is shown here.
Internships on this program do not include meals, as affordable supermarkets are easily accessible. With its incredibly multicultural population, London has cuisines available from all corners of the globe! Visit the hoards of restaurants, cafes and bars, or historic Borough Market, Camden Market or Broadway Market for homemade produce and street food stalls. If you are looking for some traditional pub grub, you can’t beat a plate of fish and chips, bangers and mash or a Sunday Roast at your local!
Dining out can be expensive in London, so you will need to budget carefully and consider which establishments you’re going to spend money in. An average restaurant meal could set you back approximately £10 to £30 and a pint of beer about £8. As the accommodation has kitchen facilities, it’s more economical to purchase your own groceries. An average weekly grocery bill may cost you approx. £65. Typically a coffee from a local shop will set you back about £3 - £4.
Activities and tourism
Most internship placements in London have a full-time schedule, which commence in the morning. This requires a commitment of between 30-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. However, interns have the weekends and evenings free and there is no shortage of wonderful things to see and do. As one of the most visited cities in Europe, you could spend hours exploring London and still barely feel like you’ve scratched its surface!. You’ll find museums, theaters, parks, festivals, art galleries, cafes, pubs and secret spots with various happenings, year-round.
Enjoy a good book and a packed lunch in sunny Hyde Park, take a photo with Big Ben, ride the London Eye, shop til you drop on Oxford Street, visit the Natural History Museum, or try your luck at spotting the Queen outside Buckingham Palace! The list is endless! Be sure to utilize your travel around the city with an Oyster Card, which can be purchased on your arrival at the airport and used on just about every form of transport within London including public buses, trams, and trains.
Looking to get out of the city for an afternoon, day or weekend? Why not visit the deer at Richmond Park, swim in the ponds at Hampstead Heath, or enjoy a picnic at Primrose Hill. Eager to go further afield? Visit the seaside town of Brighton and get lost in the fairground rides and arcades of Palace Pier. Uncover the story of Stonehenge, the best known prehistoric monument in Europe, or explore the Roman city of Bath, all within just 2 hours of London by train.
For guidance on things to see and do, ensure you speak with the coordinators in-country. They will be full of local advice, do’s and don’ts, and will make sure you maximize your time to have the best experience possible. They may also have discounted rates available for popular activities, such as West End theater productions, as well as travel and tour related excursions. Check with them for more information - either in advance of your arrival, or once you’re in-country.
